Support Badgers Tennis Club

(from Jeannie Connor - WLTC member)

Dear friends and fellow tennis players

I would like to ask for your support (by signing a petition) for a small tennis club in Brighton where my grandchildren and their parents have been members for over a decade. The club has been served an eviction notice and could be forced to close in September. Please take a few moments to read the background to my request for your support.

Badgers Tennis Club, with more than 230 members, is the oldest tennis club in Brighton and has been serving its local community for over 130 years. The club has been served an eviction notice by the landowners who want to build houses on the site. This small thriving club has 4 courts and provides coaching for all ages and abilities. They run regular weekly sessions and holiday camps for children, they field several senior teams that participate in the local leagues, they run club competitions and hold social functions. In other words, Badgers club runs all the kinds of activities we recognise here at WLTC, albeit on a smaller scale.

Badgers club members are working as hard as they can to stop this closure and, as one of the tools in their fight for survival, they have launched a petition. Their campaign has received coverage on local BBC and ITV and in the local press, they are leafletting at Wimbledon and Judy Murray has lent her support by signing the petition. I hope that members of WLTC who recognise and appreciate the benefits of playing tennis will feel able to support a fellow club by signing the petition (link below). Badgers club is an important part of its local community and it is essential that we provide sports facilities in this country that are available to all.

My involvement with the club is through my daughter and her family who are all members; my three grandchildren have all learnt to play tennis at Badgers and play regularly. I have spent many hours there myself when visiting the family and can vouch for the genuine enthusiasm and involvement of its members. It will be a devastating blow to everyone at Badgers if this eviction in September goes ahead.
