The Bar Refurb has almost been completed! We hope you like it as much as we do.
The glass balcony is now finished. Viewing on all courts should be much nicer now!
Please read below a wonderful insight from David Oldcorn, with an interesting story about one of our past members...
David Oldcorn writes:-
When I joined Windsor Lawn Tennis Club in 2003 the honours boards for all tournament winners up that date were fixed to the wall where the 21st century honours board are now positioned, and I was intrigued to see that HK Greenham had won the men’s singles for the first two years after the Second World War (1946 & 1947). Those were the years that I learned to play tennis at the Richings Park Lawn Tennis Club; I played there as a junior and until I married, but in 1950 I also joined Slough Hard Courts because the standard of play there was very high and I was keen to reach a really high standard (something I sadly never achieved). I do not know if Henry Greenham remained at WLTC after 1947; perhaps he too moved to Slough Hard Courts for a higher standard of play. Certainly Henry was playing there in 1950 and I was told by other members that he had been good enough to play at Wimbledon, not in the singles but certainly in the mixed doubles. I don’t know which year or years he played at Wimbledon and I am not certain who his partner would have been though I suspect it was Mrs Joyce Nickless, another excellent member of the Slough club. I can find no information about Slough Hard Courts, which sadly closed many decades ago and, along with the greyhound stadium, is now covered by a Sainsbury supermarket and its car park, and neither can I find anything about Henry Greenham online, but I have no reason to doubt that what I was told about his Wimbledon status was correct. You might wonder how good a player he was; as a junior in those days it was quite normal not to be able to play with the best adult members, but I did play a set of doubles against Henry on some two occasions. He was quite probably in his fifties and did not hit his serve or ground strokes with terrific force, he didn’t need to; what I quickly found was that wherever you hit the ball to, he was there to cover it, and to hit it to wherever you were not; he seemed to attract your ball to him and repelled it to open spaces with ease. Unfortunately Henry ceased playing at Slough quite soon after I joined, probably to concentrate on golf. To conclude, I suspect that Henry was the only member of WLTC ever to have played in the Wimbledon Championships, but hopefully one of the excellent juniors I currently see at WLTC will one day join him.
In memory of her mum, Sabrina decided to take on a challenge to raise some money for Cancer Research before her 40th Birthday. She decided to swim the distance of the English Channel - an impressive 33km!
In Sabrina’s words: I plan to turn 40 with a splash.. so with this in mind I have decided to swim the distance of the English Channel before I’m 40 (next week)! I’d really like to end this year on a positive so would love to make a contribution to Cancer research in memory of my beautiful mum who sadly lost her battle to cancer at only 37! Please help me make a difference ????
